Periodontitis, commonly referred to as "gum disease", is a bacterial inflammatory disease. An untreated periodontitis will lead to irreversible destruction of the bone and the gingiva, thus causing mobility and loss of teeth.
Various factors like inappropriate oral hygiene, smoking, stress, systemic diseases and medication could cause periodontitis.
Treatments like scaling, root planing and periodontal surgery could be suggested depending on the disease's progression. Nevertheless, it is clear that the best preventive approach is to maintain a good oral hygiene and to have regular follow-ups at the dentist's office.
